Our Story
Leeds1988

In the beginning...

Intentional Promotions began in in Leeds in the summer of 1987 in response to legislation preventing local councils in the UK from intentionally promoting 'pretend' families and relationships. Of course, they meant us. Margaret Thatcher's vile and devisive law was known as Clause 28 and became law as Section 28 of the Local Government Act 1988

The wording was that a local authority "shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality" or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship".

It became our mission to produce
material that promoted, encouraged and generally g
ot in the face of everyone. We were a collective of volunteers and put every penny we made into the next project. When we closed the first time, we gave away the balance to lesbian and gay charities.

But for a time... dykes and fags zoz 'ere!

A new mission...

In a country that now has gay marriage, an equal age of consent at 16 and sexuality protected by the Equality Act 2010 it must seem like another world back then in 1987. It was. Now, with fundamentalism and prejudice allowing death sentences for being gay in Iran and Brunei, the viscious hatred of lesbians and gays in Russia, the patchy protection for people in the USA at state level, the world is as hate filled and anti-gay as it ever was. We in the UK are just lucky to live in one of the tolerant bits.

Intentional Promotions is still here. The LGBT family is as big and gloriously dysfunctional as ever. The pretend families are those that claim they aren't dysfunctional!

So now, through words and information, we aim to support the LGBT community and spread the word again. Still for free. Still not for profit.
